Participation in unions went down at hospitals and other medical facilities in 2012, according to a report issued Jan. 23 by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
About 916,000 people were union members in 2012. This represents 12.5% of health care practitioners and technicians, a category that includes physicians. The figure was a decrease from the 938,000, or 13%, who were union members in 2011. Union membership in the U.S. generally has declined for the past few decades and decreased from 11.8% of wage and salary workers in 2011 to 11.3% in 2012.
