A study by the American Health Information Management Assn. and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society found that not enough attention has been paid to the staffing needs of health information exchanges, especially jobs related to technology.
For the report, published in December 2012, the two organizations analyzed job opportunities in health information exchange organizations by surveying 35 of the groups. Most of those participating employ 10 or fewer workers.
The organizations were asked to describe their staffing needs and, according to the report, concluded that technology-related positions were in the highest demand, with 45% citing job positions in technology. The report found a “noticeable lack” of planned hiring for positions related to data security. Other technology-related positions in high demand dealt with data integration, help desk support, data quality and technical project management.
